Blackfalds Bike Skills Park, AB

{alt_text}

In winter 2017, the Town of Blackfalds put out a proposal for the design-build of a Bike Skills Park as part of the greater All-Star Park community development which houses various sports and recreation fields, a skatepark and public school. Hoots Ltd. was called on by NAK Design Strategies - Calgary to collaborate on a proposal that would provide 3 complete bike park design concepts with a diverse range of features and components for all rider levels on a 12 acre piece of land; and incorporating family friendly amenities and sustainable stormwater management, erosion mitigation and greening approaches.

Following award of proposal, Hoots worked with NAK and the Town to host a comprehensive public engagement and stakeholder workshop alongside meetings with local authorities to garner input and ideas towards the selected concept. Responding to feedback from local riders, bikeshops, the racing community and general public, a detailed design package was put together over spring / summer 2017 with construction taking place thereafter.

In early fall 2017, Hoots completed the bike park working closely with the community and volunteers. The bike skills factility includes an innovative pump track, wood skills / balance area, and progressive jump line series from beginner to expert - engaging and challenging riders with various jump styles and forms from flat to sloped table tops, semi tables, gaps, step ups and step downs, together with wood ramps, log launch and wall ride. The jump lines and Flow Trail run the full length of the Park alongside skills trails and perimeter path. The start / return hill to the north and spectator mound to the south offer significant vantage points, and unique infrastructure / amenities comprising of drainage bridges, swales, rockery, and log seating / dividers provide for naturalized elements within a fun, recreation space.

The Blackfalds Bike Skills Park is an exciting addition to the Town bringing residents, family and visitors together to enjoy in healthy, outdoor activity. During construction, riders were out testing the bike park facilities with the Hoots crew and documenting progress. Now complete, the Park continues to be enjoyed by the local and greater community and with its official grand opening on June 9, 2018!
