Penzer Park, Langley, BC
The City of Langley decided to move forward with a large scale Skills Park in a unused area of land adjacent to a baseball field in the heart of family packed neighborhoods. The successful build of a bmx race track with high profile club and skateboard park only blocks away from the proposed Skills Park combined with several schools in the immediate area promised high hopes for the park.
The provisioning of the park required the partnership of City of Langley, Greenway Landscape Architectual firm and Hoots Inc. On Langley’s request ’full’ inclusion and feedback from the public was necessary and design concepts were direct results from the community sessions.
Penzer Skills Park includes a huge array of technical features in one of the most progressive and sessionable areas while providing complete ‘flow moments’ including a suspended ride over 300’ long. A series of jump lines from beginner to expert matched with some new school ‘slope style’ features compliments the flow and feel of the park.
Langley Skills Park is the first park built with specific wheelchair access and engages skills building opportunities for wheelchair use in a natural environment directly with other park users.
Local youth and riders contributed daily and made significant impact on what got built in the construction timeline. While the city maintains the park and holds the liability for the park, the same local youth who helped build still come out with shovels to shape and maintain.
