Be sure to bring your bike to Biketown, AB!

Flow trail, big jumps, drops of all sizes, and an xc trail mark the completion of Phase 3 at the Riverview Bike Park in Biketown. This bike park is super fun and has something for everyone, attracting visitors from all over Central Alberta. While building this summer we met people from Sherwood Park, Stony Plain, Leduc, Edmonton, Beaumont, Calmar, Spruce Grove and everywhere in between!

The Town of Devon and the Devon Bicycle Association has committed wholeheartedly to making Biketown, AB a place where people go so they can enjoy everything BIKE. Only 3 short years into the process and the community is going strong, hosting multiple races including xc, cross, Paralympic and road, a weekly cruiser bike ride, bike polo, Sprockids among many others!

Cycling love

Local bike repair shop, Shift Happens, run by Mom/Daughter team, Judy and Pepper Harlton are doing an awesome job at keeping people’s bikes in great working condition, encouraging participation in all events, getting ladies involved, hosting clinics (Wine, Wenches, & Wrenches) among others and starting up a bike polo league!!! These are two busy ladies but they still find time to ride their bikes, be it road, cross, cruiser or xc.

The cruiser bike club (yes, you read it correctly), in Biketown is 20-40 strong on any given Wednesday night in the summer. They pick a theme (Superheroes, Western, etc). and cruise the streets of Devon before heading to someone’s house for weekly “refreshments”. We thoroughly enjoyed our time cruising with the club while in town!

Looks like Pocahontas is going cruisin'

Local coffee shop, Grounded, kept us well fed throughout the project and continue to support everything Biketown, including serving fresh waffles at the Tour of Alberta - so awesome! The ladies at this coffee shop make a mean cupcake and can be spotted riding their cruisers around town.

We had an awesome time building Phase 3 in Devon this summer and found time to ride our bikes and hang out with the locals!

The Hoots crew had the opportunity to participate in the Tour of Alberta festival for the start of Stage 2 on Sep. 5.  It was awesome to see 1500 school kids cheer on the riders as they went through the start gate! We had fun hanging out with the Edmonton Bike Polo crew and a good time was had by everyone that tried the Hoots pump track.

Devon has a lot going on in their small town, be sure to check out ridedevon.ca to get all the goods on Biketown! We are so stoked to be working with everyone in Devon to create Biketown, AB! Check out what they had to say about working with the Hoots crew:

"Working with Jay Hoots and his crew over the last few years has been a great experience.  Jay basically created the international standards and best practices for bike park development and is working with IMBA to literally write the book about them.  He is very knowledgeable and willing to work with the municipality, not only on the creation  of the park, but on mitigating liability and instructing parks staff and volunteer groups on park maintenance and inspection and even running jump clinics.  Hanging our community’s name on a brand like Bike Town Alberta, meant that we not only needed to be the first bike park in the region, we needed it to be the best.  We checked in with the cycling community to see who they recommended build the park, unanimously they said Jay Hoots.  Building this park was our first major product after adopting the brand, there was a lot on the line as the cycling world watched to see if we were going to live up to the hype. We are very pleased with the park, the cycling world loves it and thanks to Jay’s efforts we now feel that we can own our brand." - Janet Guthrie (Town of Devon - Community Projects Coordinator)
