Into 2025, Phase 3 is now underway for the Bike Park with building of an expansive Paved Pump Track, Skills Area and Complex, alongside additional trail development. Check out clip from the crew with glimpse of all things involved including test riding by the team, local riders and volunteers – of course!
The backdrop to the project began in 2011 when the Whitecourt Mountain Bike Association (WMBA) was formed and dreamt of a Bike Park. Recognizing the interest, demand and benefits it would bring as a popular recreation attraction, the WMBA outreached extensively and garnered support and funding from the Town, Woodlands County and other local business to bring their vision to fruition.
In 2016, the WMBA and Town worked with Jay to develop a comprehensive Bike Park design for all skill levels and user groups. Located in the SW area of Town, the 11 ha Park would be implemented in 4 phases connecting to existing trails and facilities with diverse range of features based on community input.
In 2017, Phase 1 was completed with Start / Return deck integrated into hillside, and wood drops and entry features taking riders into series of Progressive and Semi Gap Jump lines. A 1.5 km multi-use trail was also built winding through the woods and varied terrain with boardwalk crossings and connection to Town trails. In 2019, Phase 2 brought in an expert BMX style Jumps line and intermediate Flow Jumps trail.
The Bike Park project continues to be an amazing community-driven endeavour with enthusiastic locals and volunteers coming out to assist in site prep and install of the various features, engaging meaningfully and furthering their knowledge and appreciation in creating durable, sustainable facilities that complement the environment and setting!
