In 2023, Hoots partnered with NAK Design Strategies for development of Southwinds Park within a new residential community in southwest Airdrie. The Park, built on a reconstructed nature reserve, includes naturalized planting and greenery, picnic area and integrated all-wheeled paved Pump Track and wood-rock Skills Zones for beginner to advanced level riders.
Hoots prepared detailed design drawings for the bike facility and broke ground in July. Engaging in site prep and construction, and responding to the infamous wet and windy weather, Hoots worked with Harco Developments to implement a grading / drainage plan to direct and infiltrate water into the outlying naturalized areas.
Hoots also coordinated with Grindstone Paving for materials and specialized services for final finish. The Pump Track and Skills Zones were completed in August with Hoots providing guidance on bike facility signage and line painting, similar to our other paved pump tracks in North Vancouver & Richmond, BC.
The paved track provides for progression and challenge with varying sizes of pump rollers and berms, transitions and jump opportunities, and multiple ride line circuits coming together at a central gathering deck. Lying to the east and west, the technical skills and balance zones include ladder bridges, log rides, rock ramps and skinnies to accommodate a range of riding abilities.
Since opening, the bike facility has been a popular recreation space for the growing community. Check out the latest Mattamy Homes article on the Southwinds development and public amenities.
