Cold Lake Bike Park & Trails, AB

{alt_text}

Cold Lake Bike Park is nearly complete with final features and finishing touches to follow in 2023. After many years of planning and development, the City is home to an exciting bike destination that offers unique and diverse riding experiences with Phase 1 & 2 of the Bike Park now built, along with expansive XC and multi-use trail system.

Efforts towards the project go back to fall 2016 when members of the local Speed Demons XC mtb riding club presented to City Council with a vision for a Ride Training Centre. Located in a 120 acre park reserve surrounding the Cold Lake Museums, a recreation sports facility was proposed for year-round activity and race events that would support local business and tourism.

Alongside presenting other successful Bike Park examples in the region and public survey results in support, the group also shared preliminary concepts from Jay Hoots whom the group reached out to for help and guidance. In the ensuing years, Hoots developed the detailed design with expanded Bike Park and Trails, and suggested amenities / infrastructure to compliment the Museums. In spring 2018, Hoots worked with the club and City to facilitate an open house to help shape the Cold Lake Trails & Bike Park Master Plan with plans to begin construction in 2019.

From 2019 - 2022, the Hoots crew worked together with the community and volunteers to build beginner to advanced riding and multi-use trails, and the first two phases of the Bike Park. The latter including integrated Start/Return Hill with Progressive Drops, junior and senior Pump Tracks, Jump Line stacks, Wood-Rock Skills with ground features and elevated North Shore Balance Areas / Complex, Flow Trail with Wall Ride, and Expert Jumps with series of Wood Take-off Ramps.

Riders and the community continue to enjoy the trails year round and Bike Park during the riding season. Meanwhile, 2023 construction planning is in the works for Phase 3 of the Bike Park to complete this exciting facility!
