Railway Granville Bike Park & Paved Track, Richmond, BC 2021

{alt_text}

Bustling since opening in summer 2021, Railway Granville Bike Park welcomes riders and wheeled-users from beginner to advanced to pedal, coast, scoot and skate the paved pump track. With central platform deck and variety of rollers, berms, depths and steepness, the track offers exciting ride line circuits, transitions and jump opportunities. Riders can also check out the technical balance features looping around the track, offering progressive skills development on wood-rock components.

Planning began in early 2021 when the City in collaboration with Hoots Ltd. carried out public engagement with local riders and the community to help shape design. Through social media outreach including Lets Talk Richmond with online survey and virtual open house, Hoots developed and presented 3 concepts with differing dirt and paved track layouts, options and skills features. The goal to provide a fun complementary facility to Garden City Bike Park just east of Railway Granville, and enable beginner to intermediate riders to work on skills.

Feedback revealed strong preference for a paved pump track with diversified lines and accompanying skills features. Upon review and approval of the refined concept and detailed design, Hoots worked with the City to source local materials, hitting the ground in spring for site prep, layout and construction. Continuing into summer, the Hoots crew worked heartily - building, shaping and compacting; and engaging local riders / volunteers to assist in finish work, and sub-contractors for paving services.

By mid-summer the grass space had turned into a unique bike facility and go to venue in addition to the Thompson Community Centre, skate park and sports facilities just across Granville Ave. to the north; and popular Railway Greenway path running adjacent to the west. The finished Bike Park balances and integrates with the naturalized plant bed at the south with various wood-rock skills features, boulders and log seating. Splashy track line painting and perimeter cedar fencing has also been installed by the City.
