Mountain Air Bike Skills Park, Burnaby, BC

Located on 2 ½ acres in Burnaby BC, Mountain Air Park opened in May 2008 as the largest public bike Skills parks in the world. Its unique and custom built features, central proximity in the Greater Vancouver area, multi-level design for the novice rider to the advanced have quickly made it a destination bike skills park.

The Metro Vancouver area is the hub of some of the most unique and renowned mountain bike terrain in the world. As this sport continues to increase in popularity, a number of “home-made” bike structures have been constructed in unsafe and sensitive environmental areas. “Mountain Air”, located in the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, was developed to balance the demands for recreation with the protection of the environment. It is a dedicated space where mountain bikers can gain bike crucial bike handling skills in a safe environment.

Prior to the design and construction, a management plan as well as environmental impact study was completed to minimize the impact that this recreation facility would have in a conservation area. In addition, as the area was formerly a gun target and skeet range, extensive geotechnical work was undertaken to stabilize the contaminated waste which included a protective engineered fill soil cap that covers the entire site.

The facility promotes progressive skill development through self exploration in an engaging environment full of challenges, yet can be enjoyed regardless of any age or ability level. It includes dirt jumps, hillside technical features, north shore style and berm descents with straight and curved wall rides. The lower flat area consists of a bike skills development area, with a wide range of technical riding elements such as a wooden triangular pump track, speed trials, balance box, teeter totters and various log and rock challenges.

Amenities include 150 parking stalls, interpretive signs, picnic area, toilet facilities, bike wash and drinking water fountain. A 20-foot galvanized steel sculpture of “Free Rider” completes the bike skills park bringing together arts, recreation and the environment.
