Southwinds Paved Pump Track & Skills Facility, Airdrie, AB (2023)

{alt_text}

In 2023, Hoots Ltd. partnered with NAK Design Strategies - an urban design and landscape architecture firm, to develop a new residential community park in southwest Airdrie on a reconstructed nature reserve. The public facility includes passive activity space with native plants and greenery, and integrated Bike Park facility with all-wheeled paved pump track and accompanying technical skills zones for beginner - intermediate and intermediate - advanced level riders.

Through spring into summer, Hoots coordinated with NAK to prepare detailed design drawings for the bike facility and following approvals, engaged in site preparation and construction breaking ground in July. Responding to the infamous wet and windy weather, Hoots worked with the Harco Developments Inc. to implement a grading and drainage plan directing water away from the Bike Park to flow and infiltrate into the outlying naturalized areas.

Alongside the developer, Hoots coordinated with Grindstone Paving & Excavating Ltd. for materials and specialized services to complete the project in August 2023, and thereafter provided guidance on upcoming bike facility signage and splashy line painting in the works for 2024, similar to our other paved pump tracks in North Vancouver & Richmond, BC.

The paved track provides for progression and challenge with varying sizes of pump rollers and berms, transitions and jump opportunities with multiple ride line circuits all coming together at a central gathering deck. Lying to the west and east are technical skills zones with wood-rock balance features including ladder bridges, log rides, boulder ramps and skinnies to accommodate a broad range of abilities.

Since opening, the Bike Park has been a popular local attraction for the growing residential community for recreational and passive activity within the public green space. Check out a little intro to the facility from a local realtor prior to opening!
